Independence, MO – Suspect Killed in Pedestrian Crash on I-70 Near Phelps Rd

Independence, MO (September 1, 2025) – A police pursuit ended in tragedy on Saturday night, August 30, when a suspect was fatally struck on Interstate 70 in Independence.

The Independence Police Department reported that the incident began around 8:20 p.m. after officers were dispatched to the 15400 block of East 42nd Terrace for a hit-and-run accident. When officers located the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it, the driver refused to comply, prompting a chase.

The pursuit moved onto eastbound I-70 from Noland Road before ending near Phelps Road. Police said the suspect, an adult man, exited the vehicle, leapt over the median, and tried running across the westbound lanes. He was hit by a passing motorist and pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that no officers or other civilians were injured during the incident. The identity of the suspect has not yet been released.
