Kansas City, KS (September 22, 2025) – Three people were hospitalized with serious injuries on Sunday, September 21, after being struck on the shoulder of Interstate 70, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP). The incident began shortly after 5:00 p.m. when a Chevrolet Impala crashed into the right-side ditch of I-70. The driver and passenger exited the vehicle and were standing nearby with the assistance of a passerby. Moments later, a westbound Ford Fusion lost control and rolled toward the already-crashed Chevrolet, striking all three pedestrians.
KHP reported that the pedestrians – a 22-year-old Topeka man, a 23-year-old Osage City man, and a 26-year-old Topeka man – all sustained serious injuries. Two were rushed to KU Medical Center, while the third was taken to Overland Park Regional. Their current conditions remain unclear. The driver of the Ford Fusion, along with a 27-year-old woman, a 14-year-old girl, and an 8-year-old boy, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were treated locally.
Investigators are reviewing the chain of events to determine what caused the Ford Fusion to lose control. We send our heartfelt wishes for recovery to all those injured in this devastating crash.
