Clear Creek Co., CO – Truck Accident Ends in Injuries on I-70

Clear Creek County, CO (July 5, 2025) – A major crash involving a semi-truck and a box truck brought westbound Interstate 70 to a standstill early Wednesday morning, July 2, near the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel. The collision occurred shortly after 4:18 a.m. and left one driver seriously injured, requiring airlift transport to a nearby hospital.
Emergency crews responded swiftly to the high-altitude crash site, where they encountered significant wreckage and debris strewn across the westbound lanes. Both commercial vehicles sustained heavy damage. Due to the remote location and severity of the injuries, a medical helicopter was called in to evacuate the injured driver for urgent treatment.
Westbound I-70 was temporarily shut down near the tunnel to allow rescue teams and cleanup crews to operate safely. Eastbound traffic remained open but moved slowly as officials advised drivers to plan for delays or seek alternate routes.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities are evaluating factors such as speed, cargo weight, roadway incline, and driver fatigue—conditions often associated with accidents in mountainous terrain. No other injuries have been reported, and the names of those involved have not yet been released.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
