Jackson Co., MO – Two-Car Crash Causes Injuries on I-70 near MM 17.8

Jackson County, MO (July 19, 2025) — A violent two-vehicle collision on westbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 17.8 left both vehicles overturned and sent two drivers to the hospital with varying injuries late Thursday afternoon, July 17.

The crash occurred around 4:05 p.m., according to Corporal B. S. Floray, who is leading the investigation. A 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan, driven by an 18-year-old Kansas City man, initially veered off the right side of the highway before swerving back onto the roadway. The Tiguan then struck a 2019 Nissan Kicks, driven by a 35-year-old woman from Parkville, MO.

The impact sent both vehicles out of control. They careened left, collided with the center concrete barrier, and flipped multiple times. The Volkswagen came to rest off the right shoulder, while the Nissan landed upside down on the left shoulder of the highway.

Emergency personnel from Jackson County and the Independence Police Department responded swiftly to assist the injured and secure the scene. Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. They were transported by AMR ambulance to Centerpoint Hospital—one with minor injuries, and the other with injuries described as moderate.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged and deemed total losses. Traffic was impacted as lanes were temporarily closed during the rescue and investigation. Authorities continue to examine what led to the crash, including possible driver error or roadway factors.

We extend our well wishes to both drivers and hope for a smooth and complete recovery.
